To date, research has shown a link between untreated periodontitis and a host of other serious conditions affecting the heart, lungs, and blood. And that’s all on top of the dramatically increased risk of tooth loss for people who have periodontitis. Keep reading to learn more about this condition and how we can help you treat it with expert periodontal therapy.

The Importance of Healthy Gums

The health of your teeth and gums can dramatically affect or be affected by what is going on in the rest of the body. Because gums provide a direct entry into the bloodstream, healthy gums are especially important for solid overall wellbeing.

Gum disease causes inflammation, which is your body’s natural response to infection. In small doses, it is a positive thing. But because having inflammation in one area of your body increases the risk of developing it in another, people who have gum disease are at a much higher risk of experiencing other inflammatory conditions, like heart disease, hypertension, respiratory issues, and rheumatoid arthritis.

Gum Disease and Diabetes

Gum disease and diabetes so frequently occur alongside each other that they are now considered associated conditions. When blood sugar levels are not controlled, the saliva is inundated with high levels of glucose (sugar), which makes it easy for bacteria to create a home in the gum tissue. Fortunately, evidence shows that controlling blood glucose levels can reduce the severity of gum disease, and vice versa.

If you have diabetes, it is especially important that you maintain proper oral hygiene. Try to brush your teeth after each meal, or at least twice a day. Use a fluoride toothpaste to strengthen tooth enamel and prevent the buildup of plaque and bacteria. Visit your dentist regularly, and be on the lookout for signs of gum disease, including bleeding, tender, and swollen gums.

Manage Gum Disease with Periodontal Therapy

Visiting your dentist regularly will ensure that you receive prompt treatment for gum disease if it does develop. In the beginning stages, the condition can often be reversed with improved oral hygiene at home and additional dental cleanings. After it reaches moderate levels, gum disease can be treated non-surgically with scaling and root planing. A flap procedure may be recommended for severe gum disease.

Whichever treatment suits your needs best, you can feel confident knowing you have an experienced dentist and team on your side. Don’t hesitate to seek treatment for gum disease — your happy, healthy lifestyle depends on it!
