What Is a Same-Day Crown?

July 26, 2019

A dental crown is a common solution for a number of dental issues, from holding a broken tooth together to repairing a severely decayed tooth and more. Crowns keep the natural teeth in the gum line, helping you avoid the need for tooth replacement.

It used to take a dentist two appointments and more than two weeks to place a dental crown, but now it is possible to have the procedure completed in just one day. Below, find out more about CEREC and how it makes same-day crowns reality!

What Is CEREC?

CEREC stands for Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics. This state-of-the-art technology is basically made up of two parts, the computer imaging unit and the milling unit. Your dentist uses both of these tools to prepare for, mill, and place a new, natural-looking dental crown during a single appointment.

The benefits of CEREC include the following:

  • Eliminating the second appointment saves you time and possibly sick leave or vacation days at work.
  • There is no need for a temporary restoration, which may be uncomfortable or fall off in the time between appointments.
  • CEREC crowns are milled from pure porcelain, a material that is easily customizable to match the shade of the surrounding teeth.
  • Digital scans are captured more easily and more comfortably than bite-down impressions, which often cause gagging or discomfort.
  • Having everything completed under one roof is more convenient overall.
  • Depending on the reason for the crown, your dentist may be able to have the computer copy your original tooth. Your new crown will feel and function like your own tooth.
  • And many more!

How Does CEREC Work?

To place a same-day crown, your dentist will first prepare the affected tooth by removing enough enamel to allow a dental crown to fit on top. Then, the scanning tool takes a digital impression of the prepared tooth, capturing its precise dimensions and preparing a “blueprint” of the surface for the milling machine. Once this digital plan is ready, the information is sent to the milling machine, where the crown is created from a single piece of porcelain. Your dentist will then bond this crown securely onto the treatment tooth, check its fit and make adjustments as needed, and send you on your way with your newly restored smile.

Is CEREC Right for Me?

Most patients who need a conventional crown can benefit from a same-day crown. To find out for sure, schedule an appointment with your restorative dentist.
