Find your dental emergency on the list and learn more about what to do:
Chipped Tooth: If you can, find the piece of tooth that was chipped off. Clean it gently and place it in a cup of water or wrap it in a damp paper towel. If you can’t find the chipped piece of tooth, we’ll eventually be able to fix your smile with either cosmetic dental bonding or a porcelain veneer. If you can find the piece of tooth, however, bring it with you to our office. We may be able to use it.
Knocked-Out Tooth: For this dental emergency, time is truly of the essence. If a tooth is replaced soon after it is knocked out, chances are high that the tooth can be saved if it is not damaged. Take care to not damage the invisible layer of cells on the surface of the root. Follow these steps:
- Find the tooth if you can. Be sure to bring it with you to our office for your emergency dental care appointment.
- DO NOT wash the tooth, and DO NOT let the tooth dry out -- DO NOT wrap it in a tissue or handkerchief.
- Place the tooth in a cup of milk, NOT water or salt water. This will protect the cells for up to six hours. If you have no milk, wrap the tooth in clean plastic wrap (Saran Wrap, Handi-wrap). This will protect the cells for up to an hour. That should be enough time to get to the office or to get some milk.
- Come to the office right away. Call us so that we know you are coming.
Toothache: First, use dental floss or a toothpick to see if there is anything lodged between your teeth causing the toothache. If there is any swelling, you can place a cold compress on the outside of your face on the spot where the tooth pain is occurring. Biting down on a wet tea bag can also help with a toothache. Visit our office for an emergency dental care appointment so that we can find out the cause of your toothache and provide treatment and relief.
