It’s easy to come across information that sounds good and true, but unfortunately, there are far too many opinions and so-called “experts” that make it hard to discern between fact and fiction. If you want the truth about sedation dentistry and what you can expect, here are 4 dental sedation myths in Castle Rock that your dentist is eager to debunk once and for all.

Myth #1: Dental Sedation is Not Safe

If dental sedation was deemed unsafe, it would not be recommended by the American Dental Association (ADA) or U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Yes, there are stipulations and recommendations for dosage as well as guidelines as to who should receive it, but in most cases, the use of nitrous oxide, oral conscious sedation, and IV sedation are completely safe. It is necessary, however, that you go over your medical history and any medications you are currently taking to ensure that your experience receiving dental sedation is a success.

Myth #2: Nitrous Oxide Works Like a Truth Serum

You’ve probably heard people try to say that nitrous oxide works as a truth serum. Although you will be far more relaxed once you begin to inhale the gas, you’re not going to start sharing your deepest, darkest secrets with your dentist or dental team. However, should you say something that you wouldn’t have otherwise, do not worry. Anything that is said during your treatment remains confidential and the focus will remain on your oral health.

Myth #3: Sedation is Available to Everyone

Unfortunately, no, this is not the case. If you are pregnant, have an allergic reaction to certain medications, or have a medical condition that can negatively affect your overall health should you receive sedation, you will be advised against it. But this doesn’t mean you cannot still receive the dental care you need. By talking with your dentist and discussing other available options, you can continue with your treatment in a safer, more comfortable way.

Myth #4: Nitrous Oxide Makes You Laugh Obnoxiously

While nitrous oxide is often referred to as “laughing gas,” it doesn’t have the effect you might think it does. Instead of envisioning someone who cannot stop their uncontrollable giggles, this mixture of nitrous oxide and oxygen causes you to become more comfortable. While a subtle laugh might occur, it is highly unlikely you’ll lose all control simply because your dentist will need you to remain still and relaxed, both of which are not achievable if you’re constantly laughing.

Don’t fall victim to the many myths out there on the internet or among your peers. If you’re unsure about a particular fact, ask your dentist for clarification. This will ensure you have fact-based information that will help you make the right decision about your oral health.
